Home and Non-life Insurances Questionnaire

  • If you cannot yet confirm all of the above please let us know by contacting us: [email protected] or call 020-811 88 00. Thank you for your interest, we can now continue!
  • To be able to properly advise you with regard to home and non-life insurances, it is important that we are well aware of your wishes.

Insurers often offer a package discount if you take out multiple insurance policies with them. Therefore, make sure to also enter your current insurances in this questionnaire, so that we can compare those for free.

We provide an indication of the (additional) premium for most insurance policies and additional coverages. The indication is based on a family without children; the premium may differ in your specific situation.

    Tip in advance
To decide which insurance policies are important for you, it is good to ask yourself what the financial consequences are of a major damage or loss. A good starting point is to insure yourself for the costs that you cannot bear yourself if things go wrong. These are called existential risks. We explain for each insurance policy in which cases it is wise to take out the insurance. This way you can prevent having to pay unnecessary premiums.
  • This field is hidden when viewing the form
  • Personal situation and preferences
If you are living together, fill in the questionnaire with the family situation in mind
  • The insurance offer, which covers the family situation, can only have one main policy holder.
With some insurers it is not possible to advance the starting date of the insurance without canceling the policy and applying for a new one. This can cause delays. Moving the starting date backwards is always possible.
When you pay the premium on a yearly basis you receive a discount.

  • Insurer
Indicate how strongly you want the following preferences / requirements to be taken into account when choosing an insurer:
  • An insurance deductible is the amount of money you have to pay yourself out of pocket; the remainder of the damage is covered by the insurance. The higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium will be.
  • Please note: many mortgage providers do not allow you to temporarily rent out the property in their terms and conditions.
  • Many insurers apply a one-year period after initiation in which the insurance cannot be canceled. After this period the insurance can be canceled daily. Some insurers do not apply this annual period, so you can always cancel the policy.

  • Tip: do you consider the sustainability policy of an insurer important in your choice? Be sure to read up in the Benchmark Responsible Investment by Insurance Companies in the Netherlands 2019 by the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development which covers different insurers and their sustainability score.
  • Home insurance (Dutch: Opstal-/woonhuisverzekering)
You are obligated to properly insure your property with a home insurance when you have a mortgage. We recommend that you at least take out insurance with a guarantee against underinsurance. That way you know for sure that if something happens, you can have your house repaired or rebuild.

Premium indication for good coverage: €20-25.
  • Home insurance (Dutch: Opstal-/woonhuisverzekering)
The home insurance covers damage to your house. Think of storm and fire damage, but also damage to your doors and window frames caused by burglary. Everything which is fixed to the property is covered by your home insurance policy. This means, for example, that the curtain rails are insured, but the curtains themselves are not. A laminate floor is also not fixed to the property, so it is excluded from the home insurance. For all things in your home that are not fixed to the house you can take out contents insurance. More about that on the next page!

  • All-risk or Basic coverage (difference in monthly premium is €3-€6)

With the Basic coverage you are insured against the most common damage to your house, such as damage due to fire, storm, leakage and burglary.

With the All-risk coverage the Basic coverage is included. Moreover, you are insured against damage caused by you or a family member by accident. For example, if you accidentally drop a heavy object on your fixed floor or your child draws on the wall.

We usually recommend choosing the All-risk coverage. That's why we use the All-risk option in all our offers. This can be changed afterwards if you decide to go for the basic coverage after all.

  • Why a high deductible is often advisable:
The higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium will be.
If your house burns down completely, you can often cover the amount of a deductible of €500 yourself. By having an extensive coverage with a high deductible you are insured against existential risks (the real large damages which you cannot pay for yourself), without unnecessarily paying a high premium for coverage on smaller claims.
Besides the regular deductible a separate deductible, between €200 and €400, is often included for storm damage. Some insurance companies can surrender this deductible, in that case no deductible applies in the event of storm damage.
With this coverage it is possible to make your home extra sustainable in the event of damage repair.
    What is glass coverage?
Glass coverage covers your windows in the event of damage. At some insurers this is excluded from the standard coverage. You can include coverage of the windows of your home both in your home and in your contents insurance. We recommend that you cover this in the home insurance, since this coverage is sometimes already included in this insurance.
  • If you are going to renovate the house or the house is vacant for a longer period of time, there is generally limited coverage. For example, burglary and theft is often only insured if there are visible traces of forced entry of your home. Damage due to fire, explosion, lightning, storm, hail, or snow pressure usually is insured.
    Rare construction, monumental status etc.
  • Contents insurance (Dutch: Inboedelverzekering)
The contents insurance covers all your belongings that are in your home. Because you can usually still afford new (or second-hand) contents after a large damage (theft, fire or water damage for example), it is not an existential risk. In other words, you are often not immediately in financial need if you lose your contents. It can nevertheless be a nice idea to insure your contents. Your whole wardrobe can sometimes already have a significant value. Moreover, you have probably purchased a lot of new furniture for your new home.

Premium indication for good coverage: €10-13.
  • Contents insurance (Dutch: Inboedelverzekering)
Before you fill out the questions below, imagine that you have had a fire in your house and you have to replace everything. What would this cost? And could you then incur those costs again?
  • All-risk or Basic coverage (difference in premium is €3-€6)

With the Basic coverage your belongings are insured against the most common damages, such as fire, theft or leakage. Please note: damage due to accidents, such as dropping and/or knocking over your possessions, is not insured with the Basic coverage.

With the All-risk coverage the Basic coverage is included. Moreover, you are also insured against damage caused by you or a family member by accident. Think of knocking over an expensive vase or your child drawing on your table with a waterproof marker.

We usually recommend choosing the All-risk coverage. This can be changed afterwards if you decide to go for the basic coverage after all.

    Special possessions are:
    - Audio-visual equipment;
    - Computer equipment;
    - Film and photo equipment and optical instruments;
    - Art, antiques and collections;
    - Musical instruments;
    - Diving, horse, parachute, golf and fishing equipment;
    - Medical equipment
Outside of the home your possessions generally have limited coverage and are only covered in certain situations. For example, when you temporarily store your belongings somewhere during a renovation or relocation. Or if items are stolen from a well-sealed car by means of a forced break-in.

With coverage outside the home, your belongings are more extensively covered outside the home. For example, if you accidentally drop your laptop on the street or if it is stolen from you.
Additional coverages: when is it useful and when not?
Owners' interest (Dutch: Eigenarenbelang) is an extra insurance for owners of an apartment which covers some damages that the insurance from the Homeowners Association (VvE) does not fully cover. For example, damage to your belongings as a result of a leak at the upstairs neighbors.
In general, we recommend that you do not include the above-mentioned additional coverages, because they are not existential risks. Not taking out additional coverages saves premium!
Glass coverage covers your windows in the event of damage. At some insurers this is excluded from the standard coverage. You can include coverage of the windows of your home both in your home and in your contents insurance. We recommend that you cover this in the home insurance, since this coverage is sometimes already included in that insurance.
Has the home insurance of your apartment been arranged by the Homeowners Association (VvE)? Then it is advisable to first check whether a glass coverage is included there, before you include this coverage in the contents insurance.
  • Why a high deductible is often advisable:
The higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium will be. In general, we recommend a higher deductible, because you can usually pay that amount yourself if you have damage. With regard to your contents insurance you must ask yourself for which damages you want the insurance:
    - Would you like your contents insurance to pay out if there is a break-in, and there is little damage? Then opt for a low deductible.
    - If you mainly insure your contents in order to be able to purchase new furniture and furnishing when you have had a large fire, you can also opt for a higher deductible.
  • Details of the property
Enter the following information about your property. Try to answer all questions as it is often not possible to make an insurance proposal without this information. Don't know an answer? Just state that.
  • If the roof is partly flat and partly slanted, select Flat roof
  • This field is hidden when viewing the form
The following spaces do not count: living room, bathroom, corridor, kitchen, garage, storage loft and storage space.
Is the attic used as a sleeping or hobby room? Then it counts.
  • This is the sum of:
    - all floors of the house, without the storage loft (small part directly underneath the roof often used for storage (Dutch: Vliering))
    - an attached storage room or garage
  • If the house has separate outbuildings, enter the joint floor area of all separate outbuildings.
  • This is the sum of:
    - all floors of the home
    - an attached storage room or garage

    How do I calculate this?
    - Multiply the floor area of each floor by the height. The standard height of a floor for many homes is 2.5 meters
    - the volume of a floor under a sloping roof is often (just over) half of the floor area times the highest point
  • Liability insurance (Dutch: Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering)
A liability insurance covers the damage that you cause to someone else. If you damage your neighbor's car by cycling too close to it, but also if you knock someone over with your bike and that person can no longer work. In the latter case you could be held liable for the lack of income of that person. The cost of those claims can rack up considerably. Liability insurance is one of the most important non-life insurances to arrange.

Premium indication for good coverage: €5-8.
If you already have a liability insurance, it is still good to fill this out as insurers offer a package discount and we can include the insurance in the comparison.
  • Liability insurance (Dutch: Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering)
We recommend that you take out an extensive coverage for liability, with a minimum of 2.5 million euros. In countries such as the United States or in Germany, the claims can be a lot higher than in the Netherlands. To be sure that you are also well covered on holiday in such countries, a high coverage is recommended.
  • This field is hidden when viewing the form
When you don't have children or pets it is advisable to opt for the higher deductible of €250 to save on the premium.
    What is recourse assistance?
With recourse assistance coverage you get legal assistance to recover the damage done to you by someone else. In most cases, the insurance of the counterparty simply pays the damage. But sometimes there is disagreement on who is to blame, and it takes some effort to get your money. In those cases it is useful to have recourse assistance. We advise you to insure this if you do not have a separate legal assistance insurance.
  • Continuous travel insurance (Dutch: Doorlopende reisverzekering)
Travel insurance should cover more than just your luggage. We believe it is especially important that your medical expenses are properly covered abroad. They are usually not fully insured in your basic health insurance package. In some countries, such as the United States or in Switzerland, medical care is a lot more expensive than in the Netherlands. Your health insurance usually only pays a certain percentage of what the same treatment would cost in the Netherlands. That is why it is important to have good travel insurance.

Premium indication for good coverage: €4-7.
  • Continuous travel insurance (Dutch: Doorlopende reisverzekering)
What you should cover in your travel insurance depends on the type of trips you are going to take. If you go backpacking through Asia, then global coverage is great. Are you going on a vacation with the family to France by car? Then roadside assistance and replacement transport might be interesting.

  • Which coverages are interesting for me?

As described above, your coverage mainly depends on the type of trips you want to take. In addition, it is also a matter of your own wishes: do you like the idea of insuring your luggage and cash? And what would the financial consequences be if you had to cancel your holiday due to circumstances? Our advice is to make sure that you can absorb such risks yourself with savings, and not to insure these risks.
However, we advise you to at least cover medical costs abroad! Do you go on ski vacations? Then it is advisable to take out winter sports coverage.

    A few interesting facts:
    - An accidents insurance pays a one-off sum in the event of an accident. It is usually better to arrange this in a separate accidents insurance, because with a separate insurance you are also covered in your daily life when you are not traveling. You can find more information about the accidents insurance on the next page.
    - A cancellation insurance usually only pays out if a major life event occurs: for example, in the event of the death of a relative, a hospital visit or similar.
  • Accidents insurance (Dutch: Ongevallenverzekering)
The accidents insurance pays a lump sum once if you lose functionality of a part of your body as a result of an accident. Think of the loss of a finger, your vision or sense of smell. Depending on the severity of the condition, you will receive a sum of money. You can use this amount, for example, to have your home adjusted for wheelchair use, placing a stairlift or purchasing a modified car.
Do you have more than €50,000 in savings available to pay for such adjustments? Then it might not be necessary to take out accidents insurance. In most cases, however, this is a substantial risk, and we recommend that you insure yourself.

Premium indication for coverage of €100,000: €5-8.
  • Accidents insurance (Dutch: Ongevallenverzekering)
Depending on the severity of the condition caused by the accident, you will receive a percentage of the insured amount. For example, loss of vision in both eyes 100%, in one eye 50%, of a thumb 25% etc.

We recommend choosing an extensive coverage. In addition to the aforementioned costs, an accidents insurance can also be seen as compensation for the loss of future income. If you graduated not long ago, you have a whole career ahead of you. In that case you can probably start earning a lot of money, and all the potential for capital accumulation lies in the future. That possibility is still there now, but if you become unfit for work due to an accident you will probably have a lesser possibility of using that "Human Capital". You can therefore also use an accident insurance policy to generate some capital, to replace your future income from labor.
We already discuss the coverage in the event of death during the mortgage process. Sometimes this coverage also automatically comes with your accidents insurance. Bear in mind that life insurance in the accidents insurance only covers death as a result of an accident. We advise you not to cover this additionally in the accidents insurance, but to cover it separately in a life insurance.
    Consider:
    - working with industrial machines and machine hand tools, including mechanical wood and metalworking tools
    - working with large and small agricultural machines
    - work with cutting machines and knives
    - work at heights, such as on scaffolding, ladders and roofs
    - working with and taking care of animals
    - work on (rail) roads
    - cleaning of tanks and ships
    - putting out fires and rescuing people from buildings that have caught on fire
    - work in sea and / or coastal fishing or shipping
    - working on oil rigs
    - work as a bodyguard
  • Legal assistance insurance (Dutch: Rechtsbijstandverzekering)
A legal assistance insurance covers legal assistance in conflicts. Legal assistance insurance is very useful if, for example, you have a labor dispute (you get fired), or have a conflict with the person you are buying a house from, or with your new neighbors. Keep in mind that pre-existing conflicts or conflicts in development are not covered by the insurance. We recommend that you at least cover Consumer conflicts, Housing conflicts, and Income conflicts. Consumer conflicts usually fall under the basic legal assistance insurance.

Do you earn less than €27,900 per year (single) or €39,400 per year (married or living together) in total? Then you can usually get legal advice for free at the Juridisch Loket (Legal Counter). In that case, legal assistance insurance is often not necessary.

Premium indication for good coverage: €20-24.
  • Legal assistance insurance (Dutch: Rechtsbijstandverzekering)
What does mediation entail in the event of divorce/registered partnership termination?
With this coverage you get mediation in order to come to a divorce agreement that you both support. You will receive guidance from a mediator who will help you resolve any conflicts about the agreement together.

    Costs that are reimbursed:
    - the mediator and possibly a (process) lawyer or bailiff
    - procedural and legal costs of the formal divorce proceedings or the proceedings of the termination of the registered partnership
    - registration of the judicial verdict on divorce or the termination of the registered partnership in the Dutch basic persons registration database (BRP).
  • If it comes to legal proceedings, the legal assistance insurer asks you to choose a lawyer. This is regulated by law. You can then choose your own specialist / lawyer from the legal assistance insurer or an external lawyer. The coverage of an external lawyer is maximized to the selected insured amount.
  • Car or motorcycle insurance (Dutch: Auto- of motorverzekering)
If you own a car or motorcycle you are required by law to take out at least a Legal Liability Insurance (Dutch: Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid (WA)). This covers the damage you do to someone else with your vehicle. With this coverage you are not insured for theft or damage to your own car. For older cars with a low current value, this minimum coverage is usually sufficient.

If your car still has significant value, it is interesting to look at a more extensive coverage:
    - Limited Car insurance (Dutch: WA extra (Beperkt Casco)): you are insured against damage to your own car as a result of theft, burglary and fire or storm damage or damage to windows. Your own damage is not insured in the event of a collision.
    - Full Car insurance (Dutch: WA Casco (All risk)): most extensive option whereby you are additionally insured against damage due to vandalism and damage to the car due to your own fault, for example in the event of a collision.

Since the premium is highly dependent on the vehicle and the number of claim-free years of the driver, it is difficult to give a premium indication. We therefore recommend that you always include the car(s) and/or motorcycle(s) with the desired coverage(s) in the insurance proposal. If the premium is disappointing, we can still adjust the coverage(s) or remove the insurance(s) completely from the proposal.
Beware: the license plate number needs to be already known otherwise it is impossible to make a quotation!
